Abstract
City planning emerged in the 1870s as a field of knowledge and practice at the intersections of architecture, engineering, the social sciences, and urban administration. In the first decades of the twentieth century, the young discipline negotiated expanding territorial scales, from metropolitan extensions to regional settlement, against the background of fundamental state-political reinvention. This talk explores the concepts and images used by German planners to frame a project of active socio-spatial shaping of their changing world.
