Prof. Dr. Aden Kumler

Medieval Art History

Research and teaching in the field of medieval art history covers themes from late antiquity through the end of the Middle Ages. In addition to imparting basic knowledge about different visual arts and architecture, studying this field will also sharpen one’s awareness of traditional and innovative methods.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Beyer

Early Modern Art History

The field of early modern art history works on the artistic work of the early Renaissance up to classicism. Architecture, sculpture, and painting form the focus of teaching, especially the art landscape in Italy, France, Germany, and England from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries.

Prof. Dr. Ralph Ubl

Modern Art History

This field encompasses the development of art since the late eighteenth century, in particular the modernizing movements and their respective counterreactions. Twentieth-century art, in particular, critically tested, dissolved, and further developed the traditional understanding of art, an understanding that is still common today.

Prof. Dr. Simon Baier

Laurenz Professor of Contemporary Art

The Laurenz Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art was established in the Basel Department of Art History in 2002. This privately endowed professorship, which is connected to the Schaulager, creates an emphasis in the university’s scholarship and teaching that corresponds to the city’s position as one of the European centers of contemporary art with the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, the Schaulager, the Kunsthalle, and the annual ART Basel.

Prof. Dr. Markus Klammer

Schaulager Professor of Art Theory

The Schaulager Professor of Art Theory was established at the Basel Department of Art History in the autumn semester of 2013. The professorship was endowed with the intention of further strengthening the visibility and influence of art history in Basel. With its emphasis on the theory of art and aesthetics, the professorship showcases the potential for art-theoretical work in research and teaching in a particular way.
