Hanne Darboven: Aristic Production as a Form of Ascetic Practice

The dissertation project takes a body of three interrelated works from 1975–1985 by the German Conceptual artist Hanne Darboven (1941-2009) as its starting point. Stundenplan (1975–80), Weltansichten 00-99 (1975-80), and Ansichten '85', Harburg/New York (1984-85), by the research so far unconsidered, offer the possibility of interpreting Darboven’s artistic practice as a way of constituting the self within the framework of late capitalist society. The strictly standardized writing act and the use of promotional gifts from the Darboven owned coffee roasting company open up a field of investigation located between a specific form of asceticism, the bourgeois milieu, postcolonialism, and gender within the historical Conceptual Art.
